Date: 06-12 May 2019
Place: St. Joseph Organic Farm, Kwanyange, Mwanga, Kilimanjaro
On 6th of May 2019 the staff of St. Joseph Organic Farm had begun the 6 days long organic farming training. Mr. Martin Mhando, an organic agriculture trainer from Dar es Salaam was the resource person for the six day long training program. After finishing 2 weeks training for the framers at Arusha on Sunday 5th May he arrived at Kifaru and along with mission superior Rev. Fr. Alwyn M. J. D’Souza visited St. Joseph farm and planned week long organic training program.
During these 6 days farm staff were motivated and trained in various farm aspects especially in organic farming without using any fertilizers, chemicals or pesticides. Daily theory and practical sessions were conducted and exams were given during the practical sessions.
It was an amazing training program for the farm staff to learn new techniques in the agriculture and see the benefits of it. They learnt to plan the crop cycle and make the management as economic as possible by using natural material. They learnt to manage the various kinds of worms and flies.
Use of mulch in the farming was new idea for the farm staff. Place like Kifaru where very minimum rain falls; this technic is very helpful to prevent the moisture in the soil. It also helps in no weed growth thus it reduces the labor and cost of irrigation and weeding.
During the training Staff members were also asked to plan the crops for the coming months.
After learning various methods and technic in the organic farming through theory and practical the 6 days training program was ended on Sunday evening. Staff members were happy with the new learning and enthused to start farming activities with new zeal.
